Would you like to further your education and at the same time enhance your application portfolio?

The school of tomorrow will be developed by the student teachers of today. In this sense, the MediaLab Lehramt wants to make a contribution to the school of tomorrow. Targeted support measures for students will also be offered for teachers in the future.

Due to the challenges posed by a world that is digitising ever faster and more extensively, it is important to prepare those involved in education for these very challenges and to demonstrate the opportunities offered by digital media.

The MediaLab offers training in different formats. Our basic modules are self-study units that can be taken flexibly. After successfully completing the modules, the participants receive the respective certificate, which shows the competences promoted as well as the software knowledge acquired. Stand out from your competitors with proven media skills!

Attention: If you are a lecturer at RWTH Aachen University and are interested in integrating our modules into your courses, please contact us. We will set up a separate instance for you, in which you are a trainer with editing rights.

The following self-study units are available in the winter semester 2022/2023:


Module 1

Legal foundations of digital media in school use

Module description:

In this workshop, you will learn independently about the legal basics for using digital media in teaching and school. In particular, the Data Protection Act (DSGVO/BDSG) and copyright law play a role, but also the Telemedia Act. The aim of this module is not to turn you into proven professionals or to provide legal advice. It is intended to teach you the basics to enable you to deal with legal (borderline) issues in a safe way. The motto is: you don't have to know everything, you just have to know where you can find the information!

Content is conveyed to you in explanatory videos and provided as handouts. In addition, this learning space contains a collection of materials of public information specific to the school sector.

The prerequisite for this is working through the module content and the final single-choice test - this must be completed with at least 70% of the possible score.

Image editing

Module description:

In this module you will basically be shown three areas of image editing: rudimentary editing of images for your own teaching material, the basics of more professional image editing and the tools to analyse images. All in all, this will also promote your critical eye when you encounter edited images.

Creating podcasts

Module description:

In this module you will learn the basics of technology and software to create your own podcasts. At the end, you will be able to make more extensive sound recordings and edit them until they are ready for publication. This can be for podcasts, but also for sound recordings for explainer videos, radio plays and anything else for which you need a sound recording.

Creating explanatory videos

Module description:

In this course you will learn the technical basics of creating explainer videos. This includes the quality criteria of explainer videos, scripting, creating a storyboard, recording a soundtrack, bringing sound and image together and finally video editing.
So that the scope is not too huge, we limit ourselves to an explainer video of 2-3 minutes in length.

Integrating explanatory videos into the classroom.

In this course you will get an insight into the process of integrating an explainer video into the teaching context:

What are the methodological intentions of using explainer videos in the classroom?

What are the psychological quality criteria of explainer videos?

What are the didactic quality criteria of explainer videos?

What are the technical quality criteria of explainer videos?

Which teaching models can I use as a basis for planning?

Where can I find suitable explainer videos?

How do I basically create (written) lesson plans (with a view to the traineeship)?

There is a lot to consider when it comes to the targeted use of explainer videos in the classroom. This module is intended to provide a first insight and to encourage you to plan initial lesson sequences that incorporate explanatory videos.

How do I enrol in the self-study courses?

Self-enrolment is possible after creating an account with the key "123456". Please use the links hidden behind the module names to reach our Moodle instance.

How are the modules licensed?

Our modules are designed as OER (CC - BY). On request, you will receive everything you need to be able to add the courses to your own Moodle instance. 

Can I also complete the modules even though I am not a member of RWTH Aachen University?

In principle, the modules are also available to outsiders. We are happy to issue a modified certificate afterwards. Simply contact us so that we can send you the correct link and assign your submission.
